Memaloose Winery was a joy to visit. My parents live up in Lyle and I’ve often driven past the tasting room, but I’m sorry to say I’d never stopped in! When owner, Rob McCormick invited me out to enjoy a tasting I immediately headed out their direction. Memaloose wines are made by Rob’s son, Brian, and they are made using only grapes grown in the Columbia Gorge. Brian also creates wine under the Idiot’s Grace label which can be found in the tasting room. They are the only Columbia Gorge Estate winery in Washington. They cultivate all their wines specifically to be enjoyed with food. At my tasting I really enjoyed the Idiot’s Grace label 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, which was bright and acidic but full of flavor. I also really liked the 2011 Idiot’s Grace label Primitivo red. It was light and fruity. Unlike other Primitivos that I’ve had I felt like I could sit outside, even on a hot day, and enjoy a glass or two of this red. Finally, the 2011 Cabernet Franc was my absolute favorite! It’s a beautiful wine, I loved it. Memaloose is definitely worth stopping at! I only wish I’d discovered it sooner.
